What the Heck is MyBlogLog?

I just added the MyBlogLog widget to my sidebar this weekend. Not really sure why.

I noticed that several of you have this on your blogs and it seemed kinda cool so I decided to take it for a test drive. Unfortunately I haven’t had the time to figure out how to operate the thing.

Too busy sleeping studying.

Here’s what I’m wondering:

1) Am I supposed to acknowledge visitors in some way?
2) Why doesn’t my name and avatar show when I visit your blog?
3) How do I add people to my community?
4) How do I join other communities?
5) Why does any of this matter?

That last question is the big one.

Other than having a cool looking iPhone-like widget decorating the sidebar, is there really any functional reason for MyBlogLog? Or is it just a colossal waste of time?

I guess we’ll find out eventually.

If you are familiar with this beast and there’s something I’m supposed to do with it that I’m not doing hit me upside the head leave me a comment and let me know.

I haven't added it to mine, but I do think it is cool because sometimes people read and don't comment. Sometimes it is nice to see who is there even when they choose not to comment, right?

If you visit a site enough, it automatically adds them to your community I think...at least I have gotten several emails that tell me I have added different blogs and I haven't done anything but read them.

Hi Radioactive and May, Those were my exact thoughts. It seems like a good way to let your friends know you stopped by and read their latest posts without having to always leave a comment.

They have a "Help" file on the MyBlogLog site that I hope will explain things. If I can just find the time to read it.

And yes, I'm very excited by the sudden upsurge in readers. Blogging has just become way more fun. Before I felt like I was just talking to myself. ;)

Just popping in to say hi. I've been too busy of late. A lot of people use the MyBlogLog. One of the things it does is lets others know you've been there, but so does a site meter at times. Your avatar will show by you adjusting your Dashboard setting. Go to edit profile and you can add a photo there, and then your name and photo will show when you leave comments. Acknowledging visitors is your personal preference. Think how you'd like to be treated. You will be joined with a community if you visit the site's often or you can click on them to add them. Hope that helps some.

Morning Chrysalis, Thanks for the info. I read the "Help" page yesterday but it was only marginally helpful. One question I still have is how am I supposed to acknowledge a new visitor?

I've had several avatars show up on the widget but I don't know what to do. I feel like I might be slighting people and I don't even know it.

I wish someone familiar with the MyBlogLog widget would explain what they do when they notice a newcomer.

Are you supposed to add everyone as a contact? or to your community?

Am I supposed to join their community?

Obviously not everyone wants to be added or join (or be joined). It's all very confusing.

The help file did not explain proper MyBlogLog etiquette. I'm hoping someone will let me in on the secret. :)
