Finally Getting a New Roof

Well, it looks like we’re finally going to get a new roof. They delivered the shingles today and if the weather holds the roofers should be here tomorrow to start tearing off the old one.

None too soon I might add. I was afraid I was going to have to find new roommates. If this is your first time here, I mentioned how our roof has been leaking for years in an earlier post, The Joy of Living in Abject Poverty and how difficult it's been to get Slumlord to do anything about it.

Just to give you an example, here’s a picture of the ceiling in my bedroom.

Here’s a picture of Starsky’s ceiling.

Speaking of Starsky, he’s currently outside with Hutch waiting for the pigs to fly over in close formation.

The first place I lived in during medical school was in one of the rough parts of Philadelphia. We had a homeless man who would come to our foyer (a closed hallway) and either smoke or use it as a restroom (both #1 and #2). His name was Percy.

In my second year, we lived about 2 blocks from the projects and a lady was knocked unconscious while being mugged in front of our house.

Fine memories.

At least when you lie in bed you have something to stare at on the celing... think of it like cloud spotting only a bit grottier!

Hope it gets sorted before soggy plaster falls on all of you lot while you're asleep!!

or you can paint it black and imagine it as rorschach figures :)

kidding aside, i'm glad the landlord finally had the heart...

Do you ever watch the show Reaper? That is the first thing I thought of when I saw the ceiling. Yuck! Hopefully it will get sorted out soon!

Roofers started early this morning. Racket was so bad we all just left and went elsewhere. I came back for lunch. They're making good progress. Old roof is off and they're well on the way putting down new one. Foreman said they should be done by 6:00.

Tori: I've never seen Reaper. I'll have to check it out.

Xiang Mei: No plans to move. New roof should solve the problem. Yay!

Everyone: I've sort of grown used to the water spots. Gives the place that "lived-in look" don't you think? :)

Yay to poverty. So I live in a ramshackle, mouse-cage of an apartment on the North side of my town. I moved here because the South side is the really rough part-- meth labs, arson, drive-by's... etc. Little did I know, the apartment complex next to ours (literally a stone's throw away) is a low-income housing project. Dun dun DUNNNN.... yay to TWO gun-related incidents in the past 18 months and my car was paintballed last winter :) (and the cop had to leave from taking my information to go stop a domestic violence incident over there... NICE...). Also, my roof leaks, but only slightly. Worse, is that my vent from my bathroom and my drier pump their nice, steamy air into the attic instead of out of the roof. I now have a nice plastering of black mold in my attic. So you might want someone to check out yours before your awesome soggy ceiling starts making you, S, and H sick.

Hi fizzlemed, I'm pretty sure there is black mold growing up there. Has to be. You can't let a leak go that long and not have mold.

We probably should look into having the place checked out. Not really sure how to go about it.

1-800-your county's health department. I think that's what I'm going to have to do. I figure they will be able to refer me to a building inspector. I don't want to tell my landlord before I have it looked at by an inspector, because I don't really think the landlord will do a very good job with the clean up.

Oooh. Your ceiling looked bad. But, it's a good thing you got a new roof. So, how's everything going in med school?

I think this problem has long been solved, but I really have to say that your old ceiling looked bad. Hmm, damages like that usually have other associated problems; I hope that wasn’t your case!

How's your roof now? Good thing you had it replaced as soon as possible because, judging from the photos, the leaks that you had were really bad. Leaks are one of the most common problems in industrial settings and households alike. Sometimes they're easy to address and sometimes they're a nightmare.
